In another bowl whisk egg, milk, melted butter and vanilla until smooth.
Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and stir just until combined with no dry streaks.

Bake at 350°F for 20–25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
For the buttercream, beat softened butter until smooth, add powdered sugar and vanilla, then add milk a few drops at a time to reach creamy consistency.
